Whitetails Unlimited recently awarded a $1,000 grant to Pass It On! – Outdoor Mentors. This brings the total to $7,500 WTU has granted Pass It On! since their partnerships began. Pass It On! – Outdoor mentors is based in Wichita, Kansas and focuses on matching adults with a passion for the outdoors with children that want to learn about the outdoors. Activities include fishing, camping, hiking, bird watching, archery, hunting, shooting sports, and sailing. The organization started as a part of Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks in 1999 and has since been spun off into its own 501(c)3. The groups mentored activities have grown into other states including Alabama, Alaska, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Pass It On! - Outdoor Mentors’ mission aligns perfectly with Whitetails Unlimited’s Preserving the Hunting Tradition program which encourages individuals to pursue hunting and other outdoor activities. WTU and Pass It On! are both large supporters of the National R3 initiative that focuses on recruiting, retaining, and reactivating individuals into hunting and other shooting sports.
“Most hunters were introduced to the outdoors by a mentor whether that be a parent, sibling, or a family friend,” says WTU Program Services Director Russ Austad. “Pass It On! gives youth who may not have had the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors the chance to do just that.”
